Professor Harold Black’s Webpage
Harold A. Black is professor emeritus at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville retiring after twenty four years of service as the James F. Smith Jr. Professor of Finance. Dr. Black, a native of Atlanta received his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia, his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the Ohio State University. He has published over 100 papers in the profession’s leading academic journals and lectured extensively in the areas of financial institutions and the monetary system. His consulting clients included many of the nation’s largest banking institutions and best known law firms. He has served on the faculties of American University, Howard University, the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill and the University of Florida. His government service includes being Deputy Director, Department of Economic Research and Analysis, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and resident scholar at the Congressional Budget Office. He was appointed by President Carter to serve on the first National Credit Union Administration Board – the nation’s federal regulator of credit unions. He has served as a Director and Chairman of the Nashville Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and as a public interest member of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s Savings Association Insurance Fund Advisory Committee. Among his honors he has received the Department of Treasury’s Special Achievement Award, the National Credit Union Administration’s Exceptional Service Award and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Georgia’s College of Business Administration At the University of Tennessee he has received the Chancellor’s Award for Research and Creative Achievement, the Chancellor’s Award for Extraordinary Community Service, the Bank of America Leadership Award and the John B. Ross Outstanding Teacher Award. He was cited by the National Association of Federal Credit Unions as one of the 50 most influential figures in credit union history. Further, the University of North Carolina’s Minority MBA association honored him by naming its outstanding teaching award after him. Dr. Black served on the board of directors of New Century Financial Corporation, Irvine, California, the nation’s largest real estate investment trust and on the boards of Home Savings of America, one of the nation’s largest consumer banking organizations and its parent company, H. F. Ahmanson & Co. prior to its merger with Washington Mutual Savings Bank. He is past president of the Eastern Finance Association. He is the University of Georgia’s first black male freshman and the first African American student in its Terry College of Business which has endowed a named professorship in his honor. The University of Georgia has named a freshman dorm to celebrate him and the two women who enrolled as its first black freshmen. The University of Tennessee, Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga hosted an academic conference honoring his research.
