Are you smarter than a seventh grader?

Are you smarter than a seventh grader?

To starkly illustrate how far our education standards have fallen here is an entrance exam to Jersey City High School in 1885. It appeared in the Wall Street Journal in 1992. And keep in mind, the standards in 1992 were well above those in our schools today and this was what the seventh grader in those days was expected to know.

  1. It is a special treat to have a Sunday essay..
    First of all : I guess I can read Roman numerals!

    In 7th grade, my Dem Mom took me out of school to campaign for Rep Bo Calloway- he got the most votes ,
    ( but not by percentage needed for office- I learned about Democratic legislation)-
    and I won a Golden elephant ..

    Warner Robbin’s , GA, Jr High integrated , and I knew the danger was not the Black students. But the White Nationalist parents ..

    That same year, some teachers were the Church of Christ – and spent time reading the Bible to us..
    * I don’t remember a math class, but I shore got religion..

    Manifest Destiny was stated as the reason for the invasion of Mexico. Did the students understand that Manifest Destiny was God’s plan for the White Man, to steal land and kill non- whites?..

    … is the Freedman’s Bureau not mentioned?..

    I was glad to learn the cause of the War of 1812. My family church was founded on the War of 1812.

    1. I typically don’t post on Sundays but this one seemed to go nicely with yesterday’s on charter schools and block grants to the states. You are probably one of the few people who remember Bo Calloway who was the first republican elected to the House of Representatives in Georgia since Reconstruction. As you note when he ran for governor he got a plurality but not a majority of the votes. That threw the election into the democrat controled General Assembly which gave us good ole boy segregationist Lester “Pick ax” Maddox. Nixon then appointed him as Secretary of the Army.

      1. See, 7th grade can be educational!
        Just as a Sunday morning mystery, Lester Maddox’s WIFE learned what my Dem mother had done against the Dems. And he reacted in an unusual way toward her. But that’s another GA story.
